<p>It&rsquo;s no secret that Carbon60 has been an avid supporter and partner of the military for many years now. From working closely with the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.carbon60global.com/sectors/defence" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Ministry of Defence on recruitment projects</a>, and being recognised with an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.carbon60global.com/blog/carbon60-recognised-with-mod-gold-award" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">MOD Gold Award</a>, to employing and supporting&nbsp;<a href="https://www.carbon60global.com/blog/armed-forces-profile-bruno-wood" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">current and ex-forces members</a>, our involvement with the British Armed Forces has always been a priority.</p>
<p>That&rsquo;s why for the past six years, we&rsquo;ve been delighted to sponsor the Royal Navy Football Association. And, on March 30<sup>th</sup>&nbsp;an exciting inter-service men&rsquo;s match was hosted between the Royal Navy and the Army.</p>
<p>It&rsquo;s not the first time the two forces have clashed on the football field. In fact, this competition has been an annual sporting tradition between the Army, RAF and Royal Navy for many years now.</p>
<p>During a long history of battling it out on the pitch, it&rsquo;s the Army who have won the most matches, and this most recent clash saw them adding yet another win to the list after beating the Navy in a 2-1 defeat last month.</p>
<p>As sponsors, we&rsquo;re always eager to follow the matches, but with the pandemic having halted the competition in 2020 and 2021, this year&rsquo;s was particularly welcome.</p>
<p>Carbon60&rsquo;s Managing Director, Paul Nolan, commented: &ldquo;Although the game didn&rsquo;t end in the results we would have liked for the Royal Navy team, it was certainly an exciting game demonstrating how far inter-services football has come during our proud period of sponsorship.&rdquo;</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Following the recent regaining of the coveted Mercury Cup, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.carbon60projectservices.com/blog/carbon60-proudly-sponsors-the-royal-navy-football-association">Carbon60-sponsored Royal Navy Men&rsquo;s Football Team</a> have become &ndash; for the first time in 8 years &ndash; the 2024 Inter Service Champions. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Having beaten a strong British Army side 2-1 in the Mercury Cup match at Portsmouth FC&rsquo;s Fratton Park stadium, the Navy seniors went into the championship decider against the talented RAF team full of confidence. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">However, they faced an early setback in the match, falling behind early at Shrewsbury Town&rsquo;s The Croud Meadow Stadium against the determined RAF boys, who held on to their lead until half time. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">The second half was a different story though, with the Navy&rsquo;s quality and persistence &ndash; and two excellent Elliot Holmes goals &ndash; making the difference, securing an electric 2-1 win and a new home for the Inter Services trophy at HMS Temeraire. </span></p>

Sponsorship Spotlight: Inter Service Success for the Royal Navy Men’s Football Team

<p>At Carbon60 we&rsquo;ve always been proud of our close military connections. As one of our core market sectors, we&rsquo;ve continuously recognised the importance of being immersed in defence and have now partnered with the MOD on multiple&nbsp;<a href="https://www.carbon60global.com/find-a-job/aerospace-and-defence-jobs">projects</a>.</p>
<p>We&rsquo;ve also committed time and resources to our pioneering <a href="https://www.carbon60global.com/connect-mentoring">Connect Programme</a>, specifically designed to support actively serving military personnel (full-time and reserve) and the ex-services community. It&rsquo;s a free-of-charge mentoring programme we launched to help members of the forces, and their families, to navigate into work through one-on-one sessions on vital skills in preparation for carrying out job-searching tasks, like writing a CV or attending an interview.</p>
<p>But more than simply being a core sector of ours, Carbon60 benefits from such strong relationships with the forces, because we share so many of the same values. This is particularly true when comparing our own DNA with the RAF&rsquo;s - and that&rsquo;s just one of the reasons why we&rsquo;ve been honoured to act as a sponsor for the RAF&rsquo;s Ski Team for several years now.</p>
<h2><strong>On the slopes</strong></h2>
<p>The Royal Air Force Ski Team offers personnel the environment to train and compete in alpine disciplines at an elite level. Participation in this challenging sport develops many of the qualities in its athletes that are also required to succeed in the modern military. Such attributes include courage, determination, teamwork, and leadership - skills that we also seek and encourage in a service environment.</p>
<p>Team members commit to extensive training and lots of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.raf.mod.uk/display-teams/raf-music-services/news/on-the-slopes/">events and competitions</a>&nbsp;alongside their already demanding RAF roles. One particular highlight on the Ski Team calendar is the coveted RAF Championships, informally known as the &lsquo;Ski Champs&rsquo;. They take place annually (Covid restrictions permitting) in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria, and provide more than 800 RAF service men and women with the chance to compete in skiing and snowboarding.</p>
<p>Central to the success of the team is the Ski Team Manager who&rsquo;s responsible for the planning of five major overseas training camps and competitions each year, as well as managing a rigorous development and coaching programme and arranging other essential functions including sponsorship, safety, equipment, and logistics.</p>
<p>This crucial role used to be held by Bruno Wood, Carbon60&rsquo;s former Associate Director and Head of Government Services. Bruno now works with our sister company, Guidant, but continues to be the Ski Team Manager. But Carbon60 is delighted to continue to support the RAF Ski team because of our close links with the military and due to sport being such a key component in making our RAF a leading fighting force.</p>
<p>If there were any doubt in the importance of skiing to the RAF, or of sport in general to the military, Flight Lieutenant Claire Nixon and ladies&rsquo; ski team captain, explains: &ldquo;I&rsquo;m often asked, &ldquo;why does the RAF ski race?&rdquo;. For me it&rsquo;s simple. It inculcates the mindset and ethos required of a military aviator - an unwavering team spirit, mental courage, physical resilience, and technical excellence. I&rsquo;ve been a sportswoman since the age of four (gymnast, athlete, and rugby player), but have found ski racing unique in its ability to challenge and develop body and mind&hellip;.</p>
<p>&ldquo;A relative latecomer to skiing at age 20, I started my racing journey at the 2009 RAF Ski Championships&hellip;I soon became hooked and whilst not necessarily a natural racing &lsquo;star&rsquo;, my stubborn determination and limitless enthusiasm - combined with fabulous coaching - enabled me to make the RAF representative team in 2011.</p>
<p>&ldquo;After two seasons competing at this level, I was thrown in the deep end as captain&hellip;I have experienced the highs of being part of a winning team, the pure joy of watching grassroots racers achieve their goals on a word cup piste, and the delight of being part of the &lsquo;2018 RAF Team of the Year'. I&rsquo;ve also experienced the fear of standing at the top of a downhill race, the devastation of teammates&rsquo; injuries and the complexity of emotions associated with ski racing as a team event&hellip;</p>
<p>&ldquo;All of this has made me a more effective leader and aviator&hellip;I simply would not be where I am today without the opportunities afforded by this wonderful team.&rdquo;</p>

Our customer is one of Europe’s leading commercial airlines with a fleet of over 200 aircraft. Each aircraft must undergo maintenance checks at regular time and mileage intervals.

<p>Like all airlines, our customer has rigorous and robust processes for planning, managing and assuring the maintenance of its fleet, thus ensuring fitness for use whilst minimizing time on the ground (not generating revenue).</p>
<p>The sparse availability of skilled technical labour to complete maintenance tasks has been a challenge in the sector for many years and remains a genuine risk to their commercial objectives. They are therefore constantly looking at new ways to attract, retain and deploy aircraft technicians and engineers.</p>

Challenge

<p>Specifically, we manage a team of 25 aircraft engineers at London Heathrow providing 7 days per week coverage. We manage the station as a package of work (under clients Part 145) ensuring priority defects are cleared within the timescale</p>
<p>Our fixed daily charge is outcome-based and tied to the successful handover of aircraft back into service. We can respond to additional demand by increasing our engineering teams at short notice. Our gain share model is attractive to our skilled workforce because they receive higher remuneration in return for higher productivity targets/KPIs and receive fixed earnings irrespective of how much of their shift they work.</p>

Solution

<p>In the first 6 months, we demonstrated through a shift in accountability, that we could drive our engineering teams to not only complete all tasks in the allocated time but also identify and remedy additional defects. We have since expanded the contract to include additional aircraft and tasking.</p>

<p>For example, when a VIP Boeing Business Jet customer wanted to add a split scimitar winglet modification as a contract variation, we were able to mobilise and deploy our engineering team to carry out the work package. The asset was already in the hangar with its structural integrity compromised due to the stage of the C Check it was at. We therefore had to work with the aircraft in situ, adjacent to other engineering teams and to contractual bound timescales including financial penalties for late delivery.</p>

<p>Our Chief Engineer worked closely with the client Project Manager onsite to define the project brief, work breakdown structure and task for our team of six specialist engineers.</p>
<p>We liaised directly with the aircraft OEM and winglet manufacturer to confirm specifications, technical drawings, and technical instructions, and acquire all parts in time to meet the tight deadline.</p>
<p>Ensuring we had access and adequate space to work on the aircraft alongside other engineering teams involved constant communication, daily stand-ups and progress meetings with the client Project Manager.</p>

<p>We allowed a nine-day window but delivered the project for client sign-off within a total of just seven days. This was achieved through the unique expertise of our high-performing and highly motivated team, and shared objectives with our client to delight their customer.</p>

Capability Management – Naval Systems

<p>June 2024 marked the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, a infamous day when - on 6th June 1944 - the largest amphibious invasion in history took place as part of the first stage of Operation Overlord. The statistics of D-Day and the stories of those involved are staggering. In total the Allies used a flotilla of over 5,000 ships and landing craft to deploy more than 130,000 troops onto the beaches of Northwestern France codenamed Gold, Sword, Juno, Omaha and Utah as part of the efforts to restrict and push back enemy advances across the continent.&nbsp;</p>
<p>As part of the D-Day commemorations, 19 keen cyclists from the Maritime C5ISR Support Unit (MCSU) embarked on an epic crossing of the English Channel, to retrace the route of those brave Servicemen and women in honour of their sacrifice. MCSU has a very specific connection of D-Day, with it&rsquo;s base at the top of Portsdown Hill featuring a glorious view over the Southern Downs and specifically of Southwick House. In 1944, in the months leading up to D-Day, the base became the headquarters of the main allied commanders, including Allied Supreme Commander General Eisenhower, Naval Commander-in-Chief Admiral Ramsay and Army Commander-in-Chief General Montgomery.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The MCSU peloton was made up of a wholeforce mix of military, civil service and industry personnel, which was fitting given the herculean efforts that were required both on the front line and on the home front to ensure the success of the D-Day landings, without doubt one of the biggest and most important events in World War Two. In all, the peloton covered some 270km on a journey that was not only created as a chance to mark the occasion and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, but also to allow time for the brave service personnel to connect and reset as a team.</p>

Celebrating Yet Another Brave Maritime C5ISR Support Unit (MCSU) Mission!

We deliver a well-integrated project/programme management service solution, trusted by the MOD, Government peers, supporting maritime security, technology and equipment projects. 

<p>These clients require project and programme management expertise to assist on a variety of high-integrity projects, ranging from maritime onshore and offshore equipment updates, digital transformation, including business and operational network architecture, IT systems and applications across C5ISR (Command, Control, Computers, Communications, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance). &nbsp;</p>

Challenge 

<p>Our security cleared APM, MSP and Prince2 qualified PMs deliver the diverse projects and programmes through close collaboration with our customer and cross government stakeholders. Our SQEP leverage expertise in ICT and associated engineering governance, information assurance, engineering standards and ICT security to ensure acceptance criteria is consistently fully understood and met.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Our dedicated PMO track and manage contract deliverables, carry out regular service reviews ensuring adherence to service levels and guarantee the availability of resource for each project and across the life of the contract. &nbsp;</p>

And they&rsquo;re just the headlines. <p>Through the centuries and decades, engineering has developed, grown, and improved at a daily, if not hourly, rate. However, as engineering advances, continuing to make breakthroughs across its variety of fields, the industry is still struggling to achieve something that has eluded it throughout history: gender parity.</p>

<p>In the UK, women continue to be underrepresented across engineering, with females only making up less than 20% of the industry&rsquo;s workforce. <a href="https://www.engineeringuk.com/research-policy/diversity-in-engineering/gender/">And that&rsquo;s despite &ndash; according to EngineeringUK &ndash; there being an upward trend in recent years.</a> What&rsquo;s more, in most cases, women are working in positions related to the core, more hands-on roles, rather than in core roles themselves.</p>
<p>It&rsquo;s a similar story around the world, too. In the USA for example, whilst there has been an overall increase in women in engineering in the past few decades, <a href="https://www.asce.org/publications-and-news/civil-engineering-source/civil-engineering-magazine/article/2022/05/engineering-struggles-to-achieve-gender-parity">the American Society of Civil Engineers highlight that only around 14% of engineers in America&rsquo;s workforce are women.</a> And whilst the signs of some growth does raise hopes for the future of females in engineering, the growth is slow.</p>
<p>There are a variety of reasons for there being fewer females in engineering than their male counterparts, including a perception that the industry is better suited to &ndash; and geared towards &ndash; men, and an overall lack of diversity and inclusion across the industry too, which is contributing to a lack of female interest.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.engineeringuk.com/media/318281/chapter2_secondary-education-and-engineering_summary.pdf">EngineeringUK&rsquo;s Secondary Education and Engineering briefing</a> mentions that &ldquo;far fewer girls compared to boys taking GCSE subjects such as engineering, computing and design and technology, though girls are more likely than boys to attain the highest grades in STEM subjects.&rdquo;, with males making up an overwhelming majority of entries into further engineering education and apprenticeships too.</p>
<p>Therefore, whilst there are diversity and gender parity gaps within the industry already, the biggest challenge &ndash; to pique the interest of, and educate, more females in the future &ndash; is ahead of us, to not only diversify engineering but also meet growing demand for engineers.</p>

<p>In the face of such challenges, institutions, organisations, and companies around the world are working tirelessly to find ways to make engineering a more inclusive and diverse industry. One that&rsquo;ll not only provide women and other minority groups better opportunities for education and successful engineering careers, but also strengthen the industry further, benefitting from the skills, passion, and drive of more people than ever before.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, events and occasions such as <a href="https://www.inwed.org.uk/about/">International Women in Engineering Day</a> &ndash; created by the Women&rsquo;s Engineering Society and celebrated every June &ndash; have raised awareness of the importance of in engineering, as well as the opportunities available to women and the engineering companies who could benefit from creating a more diverse workforce.</p>

<p>Highlighting the gender gap in engineering, and the need to make the industry more diverse and inclusive, has encouraged companies across the sector to commit themselves to educating and creating opportunities in engineering for women and minority groups, to not only close the gap, but also build a better future for the industry.</p>

<p>With a broad range of digital systems of varying levels of maturity, our customer required assistance assuring IT systems remained online and supporting operational ICT capability in multiple domains. Any delays or breaks in service could be catastrophic and cause significant risk to key naval activity and future change programmes.</p>
<h2>Solution</h2>
<p>Our service delivered technical delivery teams, supported by project management functions. Our service delivery specialists, account management and customer services support carried out first, second and third-line support, onsite defect repair, routine upgrades, technical refresh and the temporary/permanent decommission of systems. We ensured that at least one technical specialist was available to respond to system failures within 24 hours, 365 days a year.</p>
<p>We provided a detailed project plan before creating a full operational testing facility to ensure the prompt commissioning of recycled and deployable equipment, preventing failures and improving reliability. We further designed and integrated new solutions when hardware or software was no longer supported or available.</p>

Security Assurance – Security as A Service

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Carbon60 Project Services proudly sponsored the Royal Navy Winter Sports Association (RNWSA) for winter 2023/24, supporting the association in their efforts to provide all service personnel &ndash; including injured veterans &ndash; with access to snow and ice sports throughout the season. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">This sponsorship of the RNWSA, who train and develop winter sports athletes to compete across eight disciplines and events &ndash; Alpine Ski, Snowboarding, Telemark, Nordic, Bobsleigh, Bob-Skeleton and Luge &ndash; at inter-service and national competitions, and work with service charities such as the British Limbless Ex-Serviceman&rsquo;s Association, is in keeping with Carbon60&rsquo;s enduring commitment to our Armed Forces and helping to provide opportunities for service men and women. </span></p>
<h3 class="MsoNormal"><strong><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Snowsports Festival 2024</span></strong></h3>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">As part of the relationship between the organisations, the Royal Navy Winter Sports Association invited Carbon60 Project Services to attend the 2024 RNWSA Snowsport Festival, held between 13<sup>th</sup> and 27<sup>th</sup> January at the Les Deux Alpes in France. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Four representatives from Carbon60 attended the second week of the festival, at which Carbon60 Project Services also sponsored the Banked Slalom Snowboard race &ndash; with our team presenting the winners medals at a separate celebration ceremony. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Aside from fulfilling their important role as medal givers, our representatives also had the pleasure of attending a series of events hosted by delegates and military representatives.</span></p>

In commercial aviation for example, the ever-growing number of people exploring the globe via air travel dictates a constant drive to improve the experience of airline passengers, both in the air and on the ground, and to make aircraft easier, safer and more reliable to fly, navigate and operate.</p>
<p>Thankfully, technology continues to step up, with Artificial Intelligence becoming a hugely important and useful tool for tackling aviation&rsquo;s unique and complex needs. <h2>The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Flight Operations and Safety</h2>
<p>Efficient, reliable flight operations and the very highest possible safety are paramount to aviation companies and Artificial Intelligence and its multitude of applications and capabilities is already playing a key role in the way that the industry&rsquo;s biggest organisations meet their own requirements, as well as those of the people they serve.</p>
<p>Boeing and Airbus, two of the largest aviation companies in the world, have introduced AI to overcome a variety of potential challenges in the way they operate<a href="https://services.boeing.com/maintenance-engineering/maintenance-optimization/airplane-health-management-ahm">. Boeing&rsquo;s Airplane Health Management system</a> for example is used to monitor their aircraft in flight and predict and highlight possible maintenance issues much more quickly than a human may be able to do so, allowing for these issues to be sorted before they become a potential safety concern. Airbus, meanwhile, are <a href="https://aircraft.airbus.com/en/services/enhance/skywise">utilising AI-driven platform Skywise</a> to find new and better ways to optimise flight routes; operate their aircraft more efficiently; and predict possible technical issues.</p>
<p>Airlines are benefitting from Artificial Intelligence&rsquo;s capabilities to streamline their operations too. <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/7960095a-7903-401a-8616-48cbc0a38dd1">British Airways are using AI to predict and pre-emptively correct potential faults</a> within their over 280-aircraft-strong fleet, and already experiences operational improvements as a result; whilst <a href="https://mediacentre.easyjet.com/story/17447/easyjet-opens-new-ai-equipped-operations-control-centre">EasyJet have implemented AI in their new Integrated Control Centre</a>, which manages its daily flight programme of approximately 2000 flights.&nbsp;</p>
<h2>The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Customer Service and Engagement</h2>
<p>Artificial Intelligence&rsquo;s role in aviation goes way beyond what happens behind an aircraft hanger&rsquo;s doors. Increasingly AI is by airlines to streamline and improve communications with customers and overall customer service and experience at various points of contact.</p>
<p>As is the case with companies across many industries and sectors, airlines are becoming increasingly reliant on the use of AI-powered chatbots on the websites and mobile apps, which utilise the power of AI and its ability to garner and distribute relevant information &ndash; including that which is specific to individual customers &ndash; quickly, efficiently and in a user-friendly way.</p>
<p>It is revolutionising the way airlines can answer queries, assist with bookings, provide up-to-date flight information, and even provide in-flight experiences tailored to passengers&rsquo; requests and requirements.</p>

<p>Airports are taking every possible step to streamline and seamlessly improve the experience that passengers have when they pass through en route to their destination or on their return home. And guess what? Artificial Intelligence is at the heart of it.</p>
<p>For example, some <a href="https://innovationorigins.com/en/ai-system-for-baggage-handling-at-eindhoven-airport-proves-successful/">airports are implementing AI-powered baggage handling systems</a> that&rsquo;ll not only make baggage handling easier, more efficient and more reliable, but also potentially help to reduce an airport&rsquo;s carbon footprint through a reduction in luggage label printing and other paperwork. And anyone who has been through arrivals at a UK airport would have seen how passport control has been streamlined with digital passport checking machines and software, which use AI to check a passenger&rsquo;s passport against national and international databases.</p>
<p>Airside airport operations are in the midst of an Artificial Intelligence revolution too; and even helping to reduce the impact of out-of-human-control factors such as weather conditions. In 2024, <a href="https://www.airwaysmag.com/legacy-posts/artificial-intelligence-air-traffic-control">a trial conducted at London Heathrow airport by NATS</a> &ndash; the UK&rsquo;s leading provider of air traffic control &ndash; in collaboration Searidge Technologies, utilised technology including advanced AI systems to track weather patterns and visibility with the aim of enhancing the airport&rsquo;s landing capacity during low visibility.</p>
